Today’s daily politics briefing

Joe Biden has declared his support for the Northern Ireland protocol in a meeting with Stormont’s leaders.

Northern Ireland’s first minister Arlene Foster and her deputy Michelle O’Neill held a virtual meeting with the vice-president Kamala Harris and Mr Biden on Thursday to discuss the situation in the province.

A statement released by Ms Harris’ office confirmed the US president and vice president’s “strong support” for the Good Friday Agreement and the protocol.

They also encouraged Ms Foster, of the DUP, and Ms O’Neill, of Sinn Fein, to continue working together to ensure “a forward-looking Northern Ireland” which reflects “the identities and aspirations of all traditions”.

Over in London, more than 700 legal experts have urged Boris Johnson to ditch “draconian” restrictions on the freedom to protest in his controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

This comes after women were forced to the ground and handcuffed during a vigil for Sarah Everard in London last weekend.
