The Walking Dead season nine will see Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) leave the show.
However, there’s a new rumour which suggests that Rick’s exit might not be as final for the character as it sounds.
Ninjahitman19 on Reddit posted a theory which suggests a way in which Rick could return to the show after season nine and it takes some inspiration from Robert Kirkman’s comic books.
“So, as we all know, the show will sometimes stick with the source material, or sometimes change the time or people involved in a way an event plays out,” begins the Reddit user.
It’s certainly plausible and it would seem a bit too final to simply have Rick killed off in the show.
Surely the show’s producers would want the writers to write an ending which could allow for Rick to return in an upcoming season.
Andrew also hinted Rick might not die in season nine, instead pointing out the way in which Lennie James left The Walking Dead, only to then go and star in the spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead.
“Lennie James is a perfect example of leaving without dying and doing rather well on it,” he shared at San Diego Comic-Con.
“Obviously I’m not going to tell you which way [Rick goes out]… I mean, I’d prefer the Lennie James of it all.”
AMC has announced that they have a ten-year plan for The Walking Dead franchise, which will include a spin-off series.
There have been rumours suggesting that Rick could be part of said spin-off series.
Incidentally, Andrew did tell fans at Comic-Con that his relationship with Rick is far from over.
All signs seem to be pointing towards Rick’s eventual return to The Walking Dead franchise.
The Walking Dead season 9 airs October 7 on AMC.
