Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) have been unbreakable, despite Hiram Lodge’s (Mark Consuelos) efforts to split the Riverdale lovebirds up.
However, when it came down to going their separate ways it was Archie, who pulled the plug on their relationship.
After the red-haired hero escaped juvie he headed to Shadow Lake with Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) to make the witnesses, who testified against him during his murder trial recant their testimony.
But when they got there they found all the witnesses had be murdered by Sheriff Minetta – Hiram’s sidekick.
Blaming himself for the senseless killings, Archie cried: “Everything I do just leads to more death.”
Certain there was nothing he could do to stop Hiram coming for him, Archie called Veronica from a pay phone.
As the couple spoke, he uttered: “I can’t come home,” before fleeing with his best-friend, Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), to an unknown destination.
Fans of the teen drama series reacted to the upsetting scene, with one tweeting: “It tears me every time seeing Archie hear Veronica cry.”
Another said: “I don’t know what the hell is wrong with the latest episode, but like for real I just balled my eyes out over the scene between Archie and Veronica.”
A third commentator penned: “Poor Archie and Veronica,” while a fourth added: “What a sad farewell between Archie and Veronica.”
Someone else exclaimed: “OMG WTF RIVERDALE Varchie is over? Where did Archie go?”(sic)
Discussing Archie’s decision to leave Riverdale, actor KJ Apa said: “Archie being in Riverdale kind of puts a lot of people in danger, but most of all, puts Veronica in danger.”
But he teased the possibility of the pair rekindling their romance, telling TVLine: “There is still something there.
“They didn’t part ways because of someone doing something. I think at the moment, it’s just the best thing for them.”
Although Archie and Jughead hit the road together, KJ revealed the pair will not stay by each other’s side for long.
“They have to go their separate ways at some point… you’ll see why.”
Jughead has been working to crack the mystery surrounding the Griffins and Gargoyles game as of late, so his departure may have something to do with the board game.
If Jughead discovers the identity of the Gargoyle King will he return to Riverdale?
What’s more, has Archie left the town for good? Or is he waiting for things to cool off following his escape?
Riverdale continues next Wednesday on The CW in the US and today on Netflix in the UK.
