The 48-year-old BBC News presenter has stormed the competition so far, impressing the judges and fans with her routines despite being one of the contestants with no previous dance experience. Strictly Come Dancing 2018 star Kate struggled to dazzle the panel during last night’s Blackpool special, however, finding herself second from last on the leaderboard above Lauren Steadman, 25. Earlier in the day, the Strictly dress rehearsal took place, with all eight remaining hopefuls taking to the dance floor at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom to run through one final time before the show.
It appeared Kate made a dramatic change to her look between the dress run and the live broadcast, as pictures showed her sporting a different hair style earlier in the afternoon.
Her signature cropped ‘do was ditched in favour of a mane of luscious chocolate locks which fell in loose waves down her back as she glided across the floor with her professional partner Aljaz Skorjanec, 28.
Later, when the cameras were rolling and the audience were in their seats, she could be seen wearing her swept back into a chic up ‘do, the long tresses pinned into a bun at the nape of her neck.
With the broadcaster having previously revealed her excitement to have long hair for the first time in her life when she was given a flame red wig for her portrayal of Jessica Rabbit during Strictly’s Movie Week, fans might be surprised to discover the pretty long locks were switched for a more conservative style by the time the live show came around.
When they debuted their American Smooth Foxtrot at the famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Kate and Aljaz chose to continue the love story they started with last week’s wedding-themed Quickstep.
The honeymoon routine saw them land on the dance floor in a hot air balloon shaped like s heart, dressed all in pink for the romantic number.
Kate looked sensational in a delicate pastel frock which fell to the floor and highlighted her incredible weight loss since joining Strictly with a tight-fitting bodice.
Aljaz, meanwhile, looked dapper in blush-coloured trousers and a matching waistcoat over a cornflower blue shirt.
Shirley Ballas, 57, complimented Kate’s timing, calling her “Kate the consistent.”
“You bring the most impeccable timing to the Ballroom,” she continued, but asked the star to try to “stride out” more.
Bruno Tonioli, 62, was also impressed, but Craig Revel Horwood, 53, had some criticism for the pair.
“It lacked a little bit of energy in the slow bits in the beginning,” he insisted. “In and out was a little bit graceless, that could be worked on.
“More seamless transitions, but I have to say, I loved the choreography, I absolutely loved the concept and I love seeing you growing into all of that,” he conceded.
Darcey Bussell, 49, was keen for Kate to work on not “grabbing” Aljaz in the lifts.
“But overall, beautiful performance,” she added.
Tonight, Kate, Aljaz and the rest of the Strictly contestants will find out their fate when the results of the public vote is combined with the judges’ scores to decide who has to dance again for their place in the competition.
The Strictly Come Dancing results show airs tonight at 7.20pm on BBC One.
